 Motor Vehicle Winterization

Motor Vehicle Winterization - For City Home Owners

Just want to touch on a few things that should be in every  vehicle ready for a breakdown or being caught in sudden weather change during winter months as we are now  approaching  winter in many areas of the vast planet we live on with winter already covering many places with a white blanket. Here are somethings to consider having on but not limited to

  • Blankets or sleeping bag
  • Flares or reflective triangle
  • Folding shovel
  • First-Aid kit
  • Water
  • Flashlight
  • Change for Pay phone
  • Sand or Kitty litter for traction
  • Distress sign
  • Chocolate bars for energy
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Spare fuses
  • Warm clothes and hat & Gloves
  • Boots
  • Basic tools  i.e. Socket set wrenches  and pliers  as well as a multi screwdriver

Motor Vehicle Winterization - Additional items for long distance travel

  • Coolant hose repair kit and tape A leaking coolant hose can sideline your vehicle quickly and possibly cause engine damage from overheating. Often, a leaking hose is a simple fix if you have the right items. They can be bought at any major auto-parts store.
  • Extra clothes and small tarpaulin Even if all you do is change a tire, these items can help keep your regular clothes clean.
  • Water and nonperishable emergency food Bring enough food and water to sustain you and any passengers for at least a meal, longer for remote areas or in extreme hot/cold regions.
  • CB radio If your route will take you into an area where cellular service is spotty, consider a portable or in-car CB radio.
  • GPS navigation system This is an optional item, but good to have when traveling to new areas.

Motor Vehicle Winterization - Pre-trip inspection

Now that we all know what we should have in our vehicles for around the city and short trips and as well as long-distance travel. I like to sum it up with a pre/post trip inspection list as follows

  • Hood and latch
  • Bumpers and grill
  • Signals
  • Brakes
  • Wipers
  • Coolant levels
  • Fuel level
  • Tires
  • Exhaust system
